College Republicans to Host Luke Messer ‘91
Tomorrow night, the Will Hays College Republicans will host Mr. Luke Messer, Wabash College class of 1991. Mr. Messer is currently challenging Representative Dan Burton in Indiana’s 5th congressional district’s Republican primary. His talk will take place at 8:00 PM in Baxter 101.
Below are Mr. Messer’s reasons for running, as described on his website:
Every election year, politicians tell us: “this is the most important election in modern times.” Yet intuitively, we know that while every election is important, some elections are more important than others. This is one of those times.
From Tea Party protests to spirited townhalls, Americans are stepping forward to have their voices heard. We have an historic debate today in our country between liberals, who believe we need government to protect us, and conservatives, who believe the Constitution is there to protect us from the government.
That is why we’re working with our friends and neighbors on this campaign for Congress. We represent a group of people who are concerned by the big government, big spending policies of Washington’s current liberal elite. Yet, we also know our nation’s Republican leadership has a long way to go to win back the hearts and minds of the American people.
It is time for the next generation of conservative leadership to step up for our state and our nation! Changing leadership in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District may not change the world overnight. But, this election is something we can do – in our little corner of the world – to send a message of reform.
Make no mistake about it. Conservatives in this country are ready for reform and looking for new leaders. We are tired of politics-as-usual and politicians who say one thing and do another. We believe our Washington leaders need to listen more closely to grassroots Republicans on issues such as spending, taxes, ethics and immigration reform. And, we are ready for principled leaders who respect the Constitution and understand that liberty and freedom have been incredible engines of prosperity in this country for better than 200 years.
The truth is that the Republican Party cannot hope to regain control of Congress without the support and activism of folks like you. Working together, we can and will make a difference for our country. After all, in Indiana, we don’t have to look very far for an example. A group of “can do” conservatives have been making a big difference in our state for years! Let’s bring our own brand of change to Washington!
Mr. Messer is one of two Wabash men currently campaigning for seats in Congress, the other being 2001 graduate Carlos May, who visited Wabash last month.
